Originally found in Peru in 2020, the lambda variant, aka C.37, has now appeared in the US, with 1300 cases found and identified in 44 states.
Mutations of the "spike" proteins make the new strain more resistant to vaccines. As a result, the World Health Organization has declared Lambda as a "variant of concern".
Even so, the 1300 confirmed cases is less than 0.2% of all new cases (compared to Delta's 93% of all new cases), so the CDC hasn't deemed Lambda as a serious threat (yet) as it hasn't seen much progress as a major vector once reported.
