Burglar shoots LAPD cop with his own gun after breaking into his car and stealing weapon and bullet-proof vest
An off-duty Los Angeles police officer was shot multiple times with his own service weapon after a burglar broke into his private vehicle.
The suspect, who stole the cop's firearm and a bulletproof vest from the vehicle, was shot by the unnamed officer, who was carrying another weapon.
The incident happened in the underground parking lot of the officer's apartment building in Sherman Oaks at about 2:25 p.m. on Wednesday.
LAPD Chief Michael Moore told reporters that the 'senselessness' of the incident had left him 'extremely troubled.'

'From what started out as a burglary, a theft into a vehicle, and the senselessness of this escalated into this level of violence just has left me extremely troubled,' Moore said.
The officer was heading to his vehicle with an unidentified woman when they saw the male suspect sitting in the car, the New York Post reported.
The burglar was wearing the officer's bullet-proof vest when the officer confronted him.
Police said the suspect then opened fire, kicking off a shoot out in the parking lot that then moved to the street.
Authorities said the officer retrieved his service gun and vest after shooting the suspect three times. The suspect sustained injuries to his shoulder, arm and leg.
'The officer goes back to his vehicle inside the subterranean garage, rejoins the other individual he was there with and places those guns next to the vehicle and collapses,' Moore said.
The officer had multiple bullet wounds in his torso and one in his thigh.
Both men were hospitalized and are in a stable condition, the New York Post reported.
An investigation is underway and charges against the suspect are reportedly pending.
Moore said that officer had not been targeted and that the burglar appears to have been random.
'Praying for one of my friends that was just shot," LAPD Officer William Jones Jr. wrote on Twitter'.
