Left-wing politicians, celebs react to climate change protest at Harvard-Yale football game — and it's a lovefest
It should come as a surprise to exactly zero people that left-wing politicians and celebrities got all verklempt over left-wing students who stormed the field at halftime during the Harvard-Yale football game and staged a climate-change sit-in.
But their tributes are entertaining reads.
The message from U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) was short and sweet:
Activism disrupts the present to change the future. 🌎 https://t.co/K4OLyeATMu— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) November 23, 2019
Presidential candidate and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) let his freak flag fly:
U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), also a presidential candidate, gave the protest her blessing:
Another Democratic presidential candidate, Julian Castro, praised the students for "leading the charge":
And left-wing celebrities weren't about to let the politicians score all the points with the climate crowd:
I congratulate & thank @fossilfreeyale & @DivestHarvard & the work of young activists around the globe who are calling for urgent change to the status quo. Harvard and Yale, it’s time to divest. Because when it comes to the further destruction of our planet 🌎 #nobodywins pic.twitter.com/015ZQ64CcI— Daryl Hannah (@dhlovelife) November 23, 2019
I’m proud to support the students of @DivestHarvard and @FossilFreeYale who disrupted #HarvardYale today to call for fossil fuel divestment.— Alyssa Milano (@Alyssa_Milano) November 23, 2019
When our richest universities are invested in the destruction of the planet #NobodyWins.
Powerful statement from students @DivestHarvard & @FossilFreeYale at the #HarvardYale game yesterday. It’s past time these institutions join the millions demanding #climate action, and divest from fossil fuels & cancel holdings in Puerto Rican debt. #NobodyWins. https://t.co/CI5wZkpiBw— Al Gore (@algore) November 24, 2019
The climate activists who interrupted the Harvard Yale game? Good for them! They are asking the two schools to divest from fossil fuels. Divestment is a solid kind of leverage ordinary citizens can mobilize around with their schools, cities and pension funds.— George Takei (@GeorgeTakei) November 23, 2019
I stand in deep solidarity with my precious and courageous Harvard and Yale brothers and sisters in their moral witness at the The Game for ecological justice for the planet and economic fairness for Puerto Rico!— Cornel West (@CornelWest) November 23, 2019
Anything else?
Yale campus police and officers from the New Haven Police Department had to forcibly remove the students — there were about 150 of them — after they refused to budge. The protesters were demanding their respective schools divest from fossil fuels and stop "profiting" from Puerto Rico's debt.
Yale triumphed over Harvard, 50-43, but needed two overtimes to pull it off.
